MainMovies Retailer Comparison Amazon

Amazon Amazon

Web Site: www.amazon.com

Amazon has moved to No 1 in our rankings of DVD Movie Sellers. The reason for this is a major drop in the price of postage for DVDs so that they are now only slightly more expensive to post than CDs (this is due to the larger casing).

Amazon offers a consistent design throughout their site with a number of rows of tab buttons along the top of the screen. The only difficulty in searching for DVDs is that it is a section within the Movies sections, so you have to click through all of the VHS material initially. Description of DVDs is quite good and there is OK cross-referencing of actors and actresses. Amazon has a great system for reviews and scoring by buyers but as of yet there is not much depth in the DVD section.

Pricing is a standard 30% discount, with 40% off advance orders, and 50% off selected items. As stated above postage rates are very competitive.

While DVDs are generally more expensive in the US. Reccomended retail is normally US$29 (AU$45) whereas Australian R4 DVDs tend to sell for around $39. However, by the time you take off Amazons discounts the prices begin to drop, notably it is rare to find DVDs on sale in Australia. Additionally the R1 (ie US) DVDs are often dual sided or layered, coming in both widescreen and standard, something most Australian DVDs are not doing. Also the range in the US is much bigger.
