Amazon has moved to No 1 in our ranking's of DVD Movie Sellers. The reason for this is a major drop in the price of postage for DVDs so that they are now only slightly more expensive to post than CDs (this is due to the larger casing).

Design & Navigation

Amazon offers a consistent design throughout their site with a number of rows of tab buttons along the top of the screen. This presents a clean design that is easy to navigate. Searching and Category Navigation is in the top-left hand corner.

The range available in the US is much bigger than in Australia.

Standard Amazon searching with popular results first, normally ensuring the title you want is near the top, then full search matches in alphabetical order.

Information

Description of DVDs is good and there is cross-referencing of actors, actresses and directors. Some professional reviews are provided and you can follow a link to see the technical information. Only the front cover of the DVD is shown, and can be enlarged. Amazon has a great system for reviews and scoring by buyers which allows you to see comments by other consumers.

Pricing & Shipping

Pricing is a standard 30% discount, with 40% off advance orders, and 50% off selected items. The majority of standard items are US $17.49 (AU $28)
Amazon.com has recently dropped their postage rates to make them more compatible with their Music Cd Rates. It now costs US $6 plus US $1.95 per item for Standard Air shipment to Australia.
DVDs are generally more expensive in the US. Recommended retail is normally US$29 (AU$45) whereas Australian R4 DVDs tend to sell for around $39. However, by the time you take off Amazon's discounts the prices begin to drop. Additionally the R1 (ie US) DVDs are often dual sided or layered, coming in both widescreen and standard, something most Australian DVDs are not doing. Also the range in the US is much bigger.
