Compact Disc Prices Between
High Street Retailers and Online A Win For Chaos
With all the recent controversy over record prices
and imports, ChaosMusic did a survey on nine top new artist titles in various
genres and nine top back catalogue titles, comparing them between the Pitt
Street megastore of Sanity Music and overseas CD reseller CDNOW.
The surprising result is that on orders near the $200 mark, where sales
tax and duty are not charged by Customs on personal shipments, ordering
over the Internet can save up to 30% over purchasing at local retailers.
And ChaosMusic proved to be the least expensive option compared to Australia's
largest retail CD chain and the top overseas online CD retailer.
As Victoria Doidge, VP Sales and Marketing for ChaosMusic points out,
"We're happy to report that our sales have tripled in recent months as
consumers find the ease and security as well as the enormous price savings
that ChaosMusic offers make their music shopping cheaper. The results
compiled by IMMEDIA! below fairly compared prices of 18 titles and show
that our company can deliver at cheaper prices than CDNOW-even when the
latter is having a storewide sale with advertised 30% discounts."

METHODOLOGY
On Tuesday September 21 at 4 pm, the Sanity
Music Pitt Street store was visited and the following titles priced. The
first nine were current sellers while the latter nine represent back catalogue.
Prices were marked on cases in Sanity. Then an hour later, the same
titles were sourced on the Net at CDNOW & ChaosMusic sites. CDNOW
advertised a sale with up to 30% off several titles which were factored
in here.
ChaosMusic gives free freight on orders over $50 which was factored
in here. ChaosMusic also offers a $10 discount and member bonus which
was deducted from the final cost.
All final prices came from total to be charged to a credit card with
the CDNOW US$ price computed at the day's rate of $US.6414 as published
21/09.
